National AmeriCorps Week: Sacora George’s Experience as a Housing Resource Navigator

Sacora is a Housing Resource Navigator with Partners Ending Homelessness. Since stepping into this role, she has helped multiple households secure housing, by working the bottom of the By-Name List. 


Interview Highlights:


What drew you to be an AmeriCorps member? 

I wanted to figure out how to help my community, and AmeriCorps was the open door to do that. It has shown me how to serve others while also growing as a person. 


What is your role? 

As a Housing Resource Navigator, I start from the bottom of the By-Name List, reaching out to clients to understand the obstacles keeping them from getting housed. Together, we identify the barriers—whether it’s income, housing availability, lack of transportation, or something else—and work toward solutions. 


One of the biggest barriers I’ve seen is eviction. Clients have trouble finding landlords who are willing to work with them if they have a prior eviction. Some clients have housing vouchers but need help navigating the rental application process. My job is to guide them through the steps they need to take and connect them with the right resources to secure housing. 


(In January, one client successfully moved into her new home after struggling to navigate the housing system. She had a Section 8 voucher but faced challenges in securing a place to live. With Sacora’s support, she was able to overcome those obstacles and find stable housing.


What have you learned while working at Partners Ending Homelessness? 

I learn something new every day. My clients teach me so much—hearing their stories, building trust, and being there for them is powerful. I love that they feel comfortable with me. I even had the opportunity to pray with one of my clients, which was a really special moment. I appreciate having the opportunity to uplift them and connect in the ways they need. 


Can you talk about an experience you’ve had with a client? 

Most of my experiences with my clients are positive. Usually, when I talk to them, I ask how they’re doing, and you’d be surprised how happy they are just to hear that question. They appreciate the resources, but more than anything, they’re grateful that we’re checking in on them. 


I’ve had people tell me, “Thank you for contacting me. This shows me that Partners Ending Homelessness is serious and isn’t leaving me behind.” That really sticks with me. 


(Once a client is assessed, they are encouraged to contact us for updates on their placement on the By-Name List. In her role, Sacora takes the initiative to reach out to them.)


How has working at PEH shifted your perspective on homelessness? 

It has changed my perspective a lot. I’ve realized how much our community tries to hide homelessness and the stigma surrounding it. Before working here, that wasn’t something I thought about. 


Now, I see how important it is to support our clients and advocate for them. This work is important, and our clients are human. I find myself speaking up more and pushing for solutions because everyone deserves a chance at stable housing.
